Lennart Karl’s words are still echoing loudly in Munich. The young prospect, considered one of Bavaria’s great hopes for the future, privately confessed to a group of Bayern supporters that his biggest dream is to play for Real Madrid. Those comments, meant to stay behind closed doors, were later leaked and quickly caused a stir in Germany.
“I hope this stays between us. Bayern is a very big club. It’s a dream to play there, but one day I want to go to Real Madrid. That’s my dream club, but this stays between us,” the young Bayern player said. A heartfelt declaration toward Real Madrid that has not gone down well in certain circles.
In recent days, Karl has faced a wave of criticism on social media, including insults and mockery. However, he has also received messages of support and understanding. One of the most notable came from Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthäus, who defended the youngster during his appearance on Sky.
“It’s great when someone has confidence in themselves at just 17. Setting goals has nothing to do with arrogance. I find it honest, not pretentious or arrogant. Real Madrid simply has that kind of mystique. Bayern Munich is in a similar position, but sometimes you want to experience something new in life,” Matthäus explained.
The former German international played down the controversy surrounding Karl’s comments. “He knows he would have to perform exceptionally well at Bayern to even come onto Real Madrid’s radar. He never said he wants to play for Real Madrid in the next two years. It’s his dream. Dreams can come true, but you have to work for them, and Bayern would benefit from that. If Karl becomes so good that Real Madrid negotiates for him, it means he will have achieved something extraordinary at Bayern first.”
Matthäus then shared a personal anecdote from his own career. “I would also have loved to play for Real Madrid. After being named World Player of the Year in 1990/91, Real Madrid came knocking. I wanted to go, but I was still under contract. We even had an agreement, but Inter didn’t want to let me leave for such a high price.”
“Karl is simply aware of what’s possible. It’s not only about football. It’s also about a different and better quality of life, better weather, and playing for the biggest club in the world. We’ve often seen that the world’s top footballers don’t always come from the Bundesliga, but from leagues with greater global attention,” Matthäus concluded.
