Eight times. That was how often José Mourinho said “Why?” in a single answer during his latest press conference. The repeated question quickly became the defining moment of his appearance, as the Real Madrid manager returned to the refereeing controversy from the defeat to Real Betis.

When asked again about his warning that the “naïve” comment would be understood the following day, Mourinho made his intentions clear.

“Excuse me, but I'm going to use your question to bring up the last match.”

He then turned his attention to the penalty that was not retaken against Betis.

“Why wasn't the penalty retaken against Betis? Was it not retaken because VAR doesn't know the rules? Or because VAR didn't want to? Why? If VAR didn't order the penalty to be retaken because they didn't know the rules, they should go home and stop using VAR. If VAR didn't order it to be retaken because they didn't want to, that's even worse.”

Mourinho continued by saying he preferred to believe the decision was the result of an error rather than a deliberate choice, while warning about the potential consequences if the same situation is handled differently in the future.

“I want to go in the direction of honesty and think that he didn't know the rules. I prefer to go in that direction. But, if this is the case, the referee can't do it, VAR can't do it. Because what's going to happen next week, or in a month or two... is that in the same situation, the penalty will be retaken. I'd like the people who have this responsibility to answer me.”

The Portuguese coach also questioned another decision from the match, this time involving Vinicius. Mourinho criticized Hernández Hernández for booking the Real Madrid captain and made it clear that he wanted an explanation for that decision as well.

“I'd also like to know why.”
