On June 29, 1920, King Alfonso XIII granted Madrid the title of Real. He did so through a letter that the monarch's Mayordomía Mayor sent to the president of the club, Pedro Parages, in which he was granted the right to use that title and which read as follows: "His Majesty the King (q.D.g.), has been most graciously pleased to grant the Title of Real, to this Football Club of which you are the worthy President, which may henceforth be placed before its name. I hereby inform you of this by Royal order for your knowledge and consequent effects”.
The Madrid Football Club was renamed Real Madrid Football Club as a result of this concession, which permitted the club to display the royal crown on its shield.
