David Alaba's return to the field remains uncertain, with the Austrian defender facing ongoing knee problems that continue to delay his comeback. This prolonged absence, coupled with Dani Carvajal's season-ending injury, has forced Real Madrid to consider reinforcing their defense during the January transfer window. Despite hopes of Alaba filling the gap, his knee pain persists, and it appears unlikely that he will be able to meet the club’s defensive needs.

According to reports, the cartilage in Alaba's knee has worn down, causing his bones to rub together and resulting in significant pain. The situation is compounded by the fact that Alaba has struggled to manage the intensity of Real Madrid's training sessions, making a return to full fitness difficult.

Real Madrid now faces a defensive crisis, with only Militao, Rüdiger, and Vallejo available as center-backs, while Lucas Vázquez remains the sole right-back. Tchouaméni may also be utilized as a backup defender, and Valverde or Militao could be slotted in on the right if necessary. The club is actively exploring options in the transfer market to strengthen their backline.
