Real Madrid’s midfield is beginning a new chapter under head coach Xabi Alonso, with Aurélien Tchouaméni set to play a pivotal role, reports The Athletic.

The 25-year-old French international, who arrived from Monaco in 2022 for €80 million plus €20 million in add-ons, has faced lofty expectations since joining Los Blancos.

His progress stalled last season after a foot fracture in October 2023 and inconsistent performances early in 2024, which drew criticism from some fans. Adding to the challenge, he was occasionally deployed as a centre-back to cover injuries, limiting his continuity in midfield.

But Alonso has placed full confidence in him. At the Club World Cup this summer, the Madrid boss described Tchouaméni as a “fundamental pillar of the squad” due to his tactical flexibility and physical presence. He played two games in defence and four in midfield during the tournament.

Now, with the new La Liga season underway, Alonso has restored him to his natural role at the base of midfield—where his qualities shine most. Tchouaméni has also emerged as a vocal leader, often conversing with Alonso during cooling breaks, and is affectionately called “Aure” by his coach.

Alongside Federico Valverde, he has become an undisputed starter in Madrid’s midfield, tasked with leading the team into a new era without Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
