Carlo Ancelotti has received his fifth yellow card of the LaLiga season and will not be on the bench for Real Madrid’s upcoming match at Mendizorroza. The booking came in the 22nd minute of the game against Valencia, during a VAR review for a potential offside by Kylian Mbappé in the buildup to what could have been the equalizing goal — an own goal by Diakhaby.
Referee Figueroa Vázquez called Cuadra Fernández to the monitor to assess whether Mbappé, who was offside, interfered with defender Tárrega’s clearance. Ancelotti, skeptical of the review process, voiced his protests. His reaction prompted the referee to issue a yellow card — his fifth of the campaign — which triggers a one-match suspension.
The decision ultimately did not go in Ancelotti’s favor. The goal was disallowed due to Mbappé's offside position, though it was marginal — only about a third of his leg was ahead of the line. Whether or not Mbappé influenced Tárrega’s clearance remains subjective, but Cuadra Fernández deemed the interference enough to cancel the goal.
As a result, Ancelotti will be banned from the touchline for the upcoming match in Vitoria-Gasteiz. He’ll watch from a box and won’t be permitted to communicate with the players directly, though he can speak with his coaching staff via telephone. It’s a rare disciplinary situation for the experienced manager — and one that could escalate: he’s also on a yellow card in the Champions League. Should he be booked at the Emirates, he would miss the return leg.
