Álvaro Arbeloa’s press conferences continue to stand out for his unwavering defense of certain players, and his appearance ahead of the match against Rayo Vallecano was no different.
Asked whether there are “untouchable” players who must always be on the pitch, the Real Madrid coach was crystal clear. “I understand the debates around football,” he said. “But I always want the best players on the field. The more minutes they can give to the team, the better.”
Arbeloa pointed to the recent win against Villarreal as an example. “With just two minutes of stoppage time left, Mbappé’s goal came from an excellent move by Vinícius Jr. He cut inside, turned, and found Mbappé, who was then fouled for the penalty. These are players who can change a game at any moment.”
He also addressed the criticism surrounding his choices. “There may be people who are not Real Madrid fans and don’t want them on the pitch. But I imagine Real Madrid fans want their best players available and playing. The five players you mentioned are footballers who, on a global level, could easily be among the top ten in the world.”
Arbeloa concluded by reaffirming his stance. “They have my full confidence. And it’s not just about my trust, their performances are what put them on the pitch.”
