Thibaut Courtois' plaque at the Wanda Metropolitano was vandalized and removed on Monday, just three days after the Belgian goalkeeper said in the build-up to the Champions League final that he was now on the right side of history, referring to the final that Atlético Madrid lost to Real Madrid in Lisbon when he was a player.
On Monday, Enrique Cerezo, the president of Atletico Madrid, responded to some Atletico fans' desire to remove Courtois' award plate by saying: "If you want to remove Courtois' plaque, go with an axe and shovel and remove it."
Hours later the Belgian goalkeeper's plaque on the Wanda Metropolitano's legends walkway was removed. Atletico Madrid considers Courtois to be a legend, awarding a plaque to every player who reaches 100 appearances in the red and white shirt.
