Bayern Munich delivered a statement performance that could intimidate any opponent. The Bavarian side first crushed their rivals in Italy with a dominant 6-1 victory, a result already impressive considering it came away from home. They then confirmed their place in the next round of the Champions League with a convincing 4-1 win at the Allianz Arena, sending the stadium into celebration.
Supporters inside the arena celebrated the triumph as if it were a final, even though they are aware that their next opponent is the so called “king of Europe”, Real Madrid.
Amid the celebrations, some chants could be heard from sections of the crowd as fans gathered with the players after the final whistle. Among them were the words: “we’re going to shit on Real Madrid”.
The strong language from the Bavarian supporters comes despite the recent history between the two clubs. In their last four encounters against the Spanish giants, Bayern Munich were eliminated each time. Those ties also shared another common outcome, as Real Madrid went on to lift the Champions League trophy in every one of those seasons.
That history serves as a reminder of the challenge ahead. Real Madrid have built a reputation for being almost impossible to defeat on European nights and will aim to prove it once again as they fight for a place in the Champions League semi-finals. The first chapter of the clash will be played in Madrid in less than three weeks.
