Nicolás Otamendi emerged as the unexpected savior for Benfica at Hard Rock Stadium, scoring a crucial header in the 84th minute to secure a 2-2 draw in their Club World Cup opener after trailing 2-0. The Argentine World Cup winner helped breathe life into the Portuguese side, saying after the match: "With a negative scoreline, we were able to contribute and get the equalizer."
Otamendi acknowledged the intense conditions in Florida but remained focused on the task at hand: "It's tough for both teams; yes, it's hot, it's demanding, but it's a tournament we have to rise to, and for us, it’s a challenge we want to overcome."
The veteran center-back was also asked about his teammate Álvaro Carreras, who is reportedly on Real Madrid’s radar. His response began openly but quickly shifted to protect the club’s interests: "Alvaro is a very humble and hard-working guy. I think if he's given the opportunity, it will depend on him... well, right now, he’s focused on Benfica, competing in a tournament every player dreams of. His future? That will be his decision."
Benfica coach Bruno Lage also commented on Carreras’ performance: "He started the match a bit shaky but then improved. We're very happy with him, and Álvaro is very happy at Benfica... and it was a huge pleasure." The coach chuckled before correcting a potential slip: "It is still a huge pleasure."
