Karim Benzema, currently playing for Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Professional League, shared his thoughts on the recent Ballon d'Or outcome in an exclusive interview with El Chiringuito. Reflecting on the award that was ultimately given to Spanish midfielder Rodri Hernández, Benzema expressed disappointment that his former Real Madrid teammate Vinicius Jr. didn't win.

The 36-year-old French striker, who played alongside Vinicius from 2018 to 2023, praised the Brazilian's contributions, stating, "I saw what Vinicius did... I don’t want to speak about France Football or France. I’ve said this before, not just this year, but last year too, and even during my time at Real Madrid. Vinicius is a player who always puts in a lot of effort, and it’s not just about scoring goals."

Benzema shared his belief that Vinicius should have won the Ballon d'Or, especially considering his pivotal role in Real Madrid's Champions League triumph: "Last year, when Real Madrid were European champions, Vinicius was decisive in every game. I don’t think there’s anyone who deserves it more."

While acknowledging Rodri’s talent, Benzema added, "I have nothing against Rodri, he’s a good player. But when I sit on my sofa and watch TV, Rodri doesn’t make me go 'wow,' whereas Vinicius has done that many times."

Benzema openly admitted that he feels saddened by the result and empathized with Vinicius: "It's a bit sad, and I don’t feel good for Vinicius, who deserved the Ballon d'Or." He revealed that he had contacted Vinicius after learning the outcome and reassured the Brazilian that his time will come: "I hope he stays mentally strong. I was talking to him yesterday, and he is strong enough to keep working. One day, he will have it."

Benzema also shared the emotional weight of the moment, saying, "I wrote him a message, and he was sad. It’s normal. It’s difficult when everyone sees you as the Ballon d'Or winner, and then just a day or a few hours before, they tell you it’s not happening. It’s very complicated." Nonetheless, Benzema remains confident in Vinicius’s future success, concluding, "Vinicius is a good kid, and he will work hard. One day, he will win the Ballon d'Or."
