The Bernabéu pitch is once again undergoing a carefully planned renovation. The club had already warned that after hosting an event like the NFL game, the grass could end up in very poor condition. “After athletes weighing over 100 kg collide on the pitch, it’s normal for it to be badly affected,” they explained.
For that reason, Real Madrid decided early in the 25/26 season not to introduce the new premium pitch ahead of schedule. Keeping last year’s surface until after the November event proved to be the right call. The pitch performed well throughout, allowing the club to wait for the ideal moment to switch surfaces. The entire process had been prepared months in advance, knowing that once the NFL handed the stadium back, the countdown would begin.
Meanwhile, the new pitch had been growing quietly at Tapiz Verde, a top turf farm in northern Cáceres. It is a high-quality mixed grass called RyeBlue Sport, a 50% ryegrass and 50% Kentucky bluegrass blend. It is the most demanding and expensive option available, chosen to reduce risks and finally solve the turf issues seen in recent seasons, even though its underground maintenance system is still being adjusted.
Once the NFL officially returns the stadium on Monday, the operation begins immediately. All machinery is already positioned at Valdebebas. Removal of the old pitch starts Tuesday, and on Wednesday a team and more than ten trucks will work non-stop from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. to lay the new turf. By Thursday it must be fully installed and perfectly leveled, with no room for improvisation.
The goal is clear: the new surface must be ready for the next Bernabéu match on December 7 against Celta Vigo. Real Madrid’s run of four straight away games will help the turf settle properly. The club is confident that this new pitch will finally bring the stability the stadium and its players deserve.
