With the works on the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium nearing completion, Real Madrid's next mission is to revive the prestigious Santiago Bernabéu Trophy, an annual tribute to the legendary president of the club from 1943 to 1978. The tournament has been on hiatus since 2018 due to the pandemic and the stadium's renovations.
"All options are being considered. I hope it can be done, but the truth is, it is very complicated," said a club representative about the prospects of bringing back the tournament. The complexity lies in Real Madrid's tight schedule, especially after winning their 15th UEFA Champions League title, which means they'll play the European Super Cup against Atalanta on August 14 in Warsaw. Prior to that, the club will engage in three preseason games in the United States, which has become a staple for their economic planning.
Following the US tour, Real Madrid will vie for the first title of a season that includes seven trophies, and just three days later, La Liga 2024-25 will commence. Additionally, the Copa América and the Euro Cup play a significant role in planning next season, as players reaching the semifinals of these tournaments will miss the North American tour due to their vacation days, which Real Madrid must grant.
Despite the challenges, the club is exploring all possibilities with the goal of reestablishing the Bernabéu Trophy, aiming to create an event as grand as the centenary tournament in 2002, which featured Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Milan.
