Uruguay has officially revealed its squad list, and Fede Valverde will be taking a well-deserved rest. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa has decided to give the Real Madrid midfielder a break, meaning he will not take part in La Celeste’s upcoming friendlies against the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan on October 10 and 13, during the second international break of the season.
Since both matches are friendlies and will be played in Malaysia, Bielsa and Valverde agreed it was best for the player to skip the long trip and recovery strain. Despite being Uruguay’s vice-captain (behind the injured José María Giménez) and someone who always wants to play, Valverde will stay in Madrid to recharge.
The decision came after Bielsa personally visited Madrid last week for a coaching conference, where he likely spoke with Valverde to evaluate his physical condition. The plan is for the midfielder to return to international duty in November, when Uruguay face more competitive friendlies against Mexico and the United States.
This October break will allow Valverde to rest and regain his top form — something he already hinted at with a strong performance against Villarreal, even playing out of position at right back.
