Raúl Asencio returned to action against Celta Vigo. Just a week after the heavy blow he suffered against Benfica, which led to a hospital visit in the early hours of the morning, the center back was determined not to miss the trip to Vigo in order to help Real Madrid. His decision was highly valued within the squad, especially considering the team’s injury problems and the delicate moment of the season. Former goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares also highlighted the defender’s commitment.
The defender had rested against Getafe on Monday as he continued to recover from the knock he received during the Champions League match involving Eduardo Camavinga. The absence of Asencio was felt by the team coached by Álvaro Arbeloa, who suffered defeat against the Azulones at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. For that reason, the defender chose not to remain in Madrid and instead traveled to Balaídos to start the match. He completed the full 90 minutes and absorbed several more knocks, but managed to stay on the pitch and contribute to an important victory in the club’s fight for the La Liga title.
Cañizares admitted he was impressed by the player’s determination, noting that not everyone would have made the same decision after such a scare. "I want to focus on Asencio. In a situation like Real Madrid's, it would have been very easy to say, 'Look, I'm not going to Vigo, I have a bit of discomfort, I'll save myself for the midweek game against City...' And yet, there he is... at the service of the team. I take my hat off to him. If he feels even slightly useful, he's there. He has a lot of discomfort that often hinders him because he doesn't perform as he should, but there he is," he said on El Partidazo de COPE.
