Sometimes, money isn't the primary factor when a player chooses their next destination. This was certainly true for Facundo Campazzo, who opted to rejoin Real Madrid after his time at Red Star, despite a vastly different opportunity.
In an interview with the Greek program Amerikanos24, Campazzo's former agent, Giorgos Panou, revealed that Panathinaikos had shown great interest in signing the Argentine point guard. The Greek club was even prepared to trigger his buyout clause from Red Star, which was relatively affordable under the terms of the Greek offer.
Panou shared that Campazzo was presented with an extraordinary offer but remained steadfast in his desire to return to Madrid: "Facu received the biggest offer ever made in Euroleague history from Panathinaikos, but he turned it down," said Panou. "They offered him €12 million over three years, but he chose to accept only a third of that to play for Madrid."
Panou's attempts to convince him to join Panathinaikos ultimately led to his dismissal. "We parted ways because he felt I was pushing him toward a team he didn’t want to play for," the agent explained. "My job was to bring him the best offer, and that was it, but his heart was set on Madrid."
Reflecting on Panathinaikos' Euroleague victory last season, Panou admitted he felt a sense of satisfaction, even personal vindication. "I was happy with Panathinaikos' success, as it proved their project was strong. Maybe Campazzo realized that next time, he should listen a little more to his agent."
