Speculation surrounding David Alaba's fitness has been ongoing, with rumors suggesting that his knee pain might be severe enough to threaten his future in professional football. His recovery, which has been longer and more tedious than initially expected, has kept him off the pitch since he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in December 2023. While uncertainty about his return has raised concerns across the football world, Real Madrid remains calm and optimistic.

Alaba’s knee is reportedly healing as planned, despite a few setbacks that slowed down his progress. The Austrian defender is working diligently and gaining more confidence as he inches closer to full recovery. According to the club, the proximity of his return remains uncertain but is approaching. In other words, while he's not yet ready to return, the rumors about a potential premature end to his career are unfounded.

Carlo Ancelotti addressed the situation in a press conference before Real Madrid's match against Celta, stating, “If we need the right player for Real Madrid, we wouldn’t rule it out, but it’s not that easy. We have young players who can contribute, and Alaba’s return is near." After their victory in Balaídos, the team returned to training, with the positive news that Alaba had started running on the field (albeit in running shoes rather than football boots). The club emphasized that his recovery phase has been carefully monitored, and the possibility of a relapse has been ruled out.

Alaba, with his hair now longer, reminiscent of the biblical figure Samson (although usually tied back in braids), is showing steady progress and remains determined to return stronger than ever.
