Antonio Cassano has always been known for his unpredictable personality, and in a recent interview, the former Italian international delivered a brutally honest—and hilariously self-deprecating—account of his early days at Real Madrid, especially his first encounter with club legend Emilio Butragueño.

"Grande El Buitre. Polite, very shy, calm. Always reserved," Cassano recalled. "I remember showing up in Madrid after my transfer wearing a fur coat—my God, I’m ashamed. He asked me to please wear a suit the next day. I told him not to worry, but in my head I thought: ‘They signed me knowing I was crazy.’ So I wore the coat again."

The moment clearly left a mark on him, especially Butragueño's reaction. "They also introduced me to Di Stéfano. But Emilio looked at me, absolutely stunned. I think in his mind he thought: ‘This guy’s an idiot. Why did we sign him?’ And honestly, I agree with him now. Only someone insane like me would do something like that."

Now 43 and retired, Cassano remains one of Italy’s most talented yet controversial footballers of the past few decades. In Spain, however, he's remembered more for his wild off-pitch stories than his actual performances. And as this anecdote proves, no one knows that better than Cassano himself.
