Real Madrid Castilla began their Primera Federación campaign with a 2-1 victory over Lugo in Group I. It was Álvaro Arbeloa’s official debut as head coach of the reserve team, and his players showed superiority for much of the match. Cestero opened the scoring in the 55th minute, and just four minutes later, Yáñez doubled the lead with a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the box. Lugo pulled one back in the 74th minute when Lago Júnior converted a penalty awarded after review by the new Football Video Support system.
