The Technical Committee of Referees has backed the controversial red card shown to Federico Valverde during the derby between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
During Tuesday’s VAR review session, the refereeing body confirmed that the decision made by José Luis Munuera Montero on the pitch was correct.
“The referee sanctions the action with a direct red card, interpreting that he kicks an opponent without the ball being within playing distance, using excessive force,” the committee explained when describing the incident.
Regarding the role of VAR referee Daniel Jesús Trujillo Suárez, the committee added that the officials in the VAR room reviewed the incident from multiple angles and speeds before deciding not to intervene.
According to the explanation, the point of contact, the nature of the action, and the intensity of the challenge were considered consistent with serious foul play, meaning there was no “clear and obvious error” that would justify overturning the referee’s on-field decision.
The final conclusion from the committee was clear: both the decision on the field and the VAR review were appropriate.
