The controversy surrounding Arda Güler's elbow to Peque during the first half of Real Madrid's gama against Sevilla has angered Sevilla supporters, who believe the Turkish midfielder should have been sent off. The blame has focused on the VAR room and the television production, handled since last season by Global Futbol Production (GFP).
Sources from LaLiga, contacted by this newspaper, have explained why no clear footage of the incident was available despite 23 cameras being used for the match broadcast. According to these sources, only the widest-angle cameras, the one positioned behind the goal, the Skycam and the camera used for offside decisions, captured the incident.
They insist there was no production error because no closer footage exists. They also maintain that the signal received by the television truck broadcasting the match to viewers at home was the same one available to the VAR team led by Cuadra Fernández at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Meanwhile, other sources from the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) explained that "of the multiple cameras present at the match, not all are suitable for VAR. The action occurs behind the referee's back, in an off-ball area. The cameras weren't focused there, only those with a very wide field of view. As has been seen, the action appears, but there is no detail."
They added that "it's not clear if it hits him with his shoulder, elbow, hand, face... You can't see it. And since there's no evidence, no action can be taken. No penalty was given on the field, and VAR, without conclusive evidence, can't do anything."
GFP replaced Mediapro last year. The company is a joint venture between HBS, which handles production, and Italian technology firm NVP, which provides technical services. It signed a five-year contract with LaLiga running until the end of the 2029/30 season.
