Marc Cucurella continued a remarkable Spain World Cup tradition before Sunday's final against Argentina by burying a coin in the pitch moments before kick-off.

The superstition dates back to the 2010 World Cup final, when former Spain left-back Joan Capdevila buried a coin in the turf before facing the Netherlands in Johannesburg. Spain went on to win their first-ever World Cup thanks to Andrés Iniesta's extra-time winner, turning the ritual into a cherished good-luck tradition.

Sixteen years later, Capdevila ensured the custom lived on. After overcoming visa issues to travel to New York for the final, the former defender revealed that he had personally asked Cucurella to repeat the ritual before Spain's showdown with Argentina.

"In 2010, I buried a coin in the pitch before the match started. I've told this story millions of times. I asked Cucurella to do the same yesterday... Marc, I love you very much. YOU ARE A WORLD CHAMPION!" Capdevila wrote on X.

Capdevila also shared a video showing Cucurella taking a coin from his sock before kick-off, crouching near the touchline to bury it in the turf, and then returning to his position.

The ritual proved successful once again as Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time, extending the superstition's perfect World Cup record.
