Real Madrid are enjoying one of their strongest spells of the season. Following their victory in El Clásico, José Mourinho's side continued their impressive run with a convincing win over Racing Santander, with Yan Diomande once again stealing the spotlight.
The Ivorian delivered another outstanding performance, capped by a spectacular goal from outside the box. His numbers since the international break underline his growing influence: four goals and four assists in six appearances.
Diomande's development has not gone unnoticed by Jorge Valdano. Speaking on Movistar, the Argentine analyst highlighted the progress the young forward has made since his first appearances for the team. "He has been gaining confidence; he seemed timid in the first few games," he said.
However, Valdano also pointed out how Diomande's impressive performances could affect Vinicius Jr.'s position in the team. "These matches are bad news for Vinicius, who will have to win back the place his teammates have taken from him," he stated.
The Brazilian therefore faces increased competition for a starting place, with his teammates making a strong case for regular inclusion through their recent performances.
Vinicius is expected to start Wednesday's Champions League match against AEK Athens before serving the final game of his LaLiga suspension against Valencia. He will then be eligible to return to domestic competition after the international break, when Real Madrid face Celta Vigo.
Mourinho had already addressed the situation during his pre-match press conference ahead of the Racing game, making clear that his appreciation for Vinicius does not guarantee him a place in the starting eleven. "I love Vinicius, I need him, but I'm not saying he's going to start," the Portuguese coach said.
