On December 4, Disney+ and National Geographic will unveil Megastructures: The Bernabéu of the 21st Century, a captivating documentary that meticulously chronicles the groundbreaking transformation of Real Madrid's iconic stadium.
The documentary highlights the remarkable architectural and engineering achievements behind the project, including the avant-garde wraparound metal façade, a retractable roof, a 360-degree video scoreboard, and an innovative logistics ring. A central feature of the revamped Santiago Bernabéu is the subterranean conservation of the pitch, enabling the stadium to function as a versatile, multifunctional venue—an engineering feat never attempted before.
Undertaken over five years, the project posed extraordinary challenges, not least of which was ensuring Real Madrid could continue hosting matches amid construction. Additional obstacles, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the historic snowfall in Madrid in 2021, tested the endurance and ingenuity of the team behind the transformation.
The documentary features insights from Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and key experts, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the innovation, setbacks, and ultimate success of the project.
Megastructures: The Bernabéu of the 21st Century will debut on Disney+ and air on the National Geographic channel at 10:50 PM Spanish time on the same day.
