Fernando Alonso couldn’t hide his excitement over Xabi Alonso’s appointment as Real Madrid’s new head coach. The Formula 1 icon and lifelong Madridista expressed his full support for the Basque tactician, who is set to make his official debut on June 18 against Al Hilal in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking to DAZN, the Aston Martin driver shared a nostalgic reason for his connection with Xabi: “He played with number 14. His last name was Alonso. He had ‘Alonso’ on the back of his shirt, and during those years I didn’t even need a custom jersey. I just bought Xabi’s—it already had my number and surname. It was perfect.”
Fernando Alonso’s affection for the former midfielder dates back to Xabi’s playing days at the Bernabéu. Now, with Xabi stepping into a leadership role, the two Alonsos—legends in their respective sports—continue to share a unique bond.
