FIFA has revealed some information about the inaugural Club Super World Cup, which will take place in 2025 and feature 32 teams for the first time ever.
The tournament will take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13, 2025. After that, the Super World Cup will be played every four years in the years leading up to the World Cup, i.e., 2029, 2033, etc. It takes the place of the former Confederations Cup, a competition that FIFA used to arrange before every world cup.
The classification criteria for this new competition were also approved. In the case of Europe, two ways will be taken into account: the results of each club in the last four Champions Leagues, including this one that is in progress. Based on this, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City are already qualified. The second way will depend on the UEFA ranking and by which these teams are already classified: Bayern, PSG, Inter, Porto, Benfica, and three more to be defined. In total, 12 European places.
In principle, only two teams from one country can participate, unless three different teams from the same country win the Champions League. In that case, yes. For example, by ranking, no more English can qualify since, by Champions criteria, Chelsea and City already are there.
For instance, in the case of South America, the following teams are already classified: Palmeiras (2021 Libertadores champion), Flamengo (2022), Fluminense (2023), and a fourth more via Libertadores (winner of 2024) and two more through the Conmebol ranking.
FIFA also approved that the current Club World Cup, as it is known, is not disappearing. It will continue to be played year after year and will be called the Intercontinental Cup. The Intercontinental will be played on neutral ground between the Champions League champion, who will go directly to the final, and the winner of a 'multiplayoff' intercontinental that will face the champions of the other five Champions Leagues: Oceania, Africa, Concacaf, Asia and Conmebol (Copa Libertadores). This new Intercontinental Cup, which recovers its original name, will begin to be played at the end of 2024 at a venue yet to be determined. The final will be on December 18.
