Xabi Alonso did not mince words following the tense end to Real Madrid’s clash, voicing strong support for Antonio Rüdiger after a heated altercation with Gustavo Cabral. "Toni told us what happened. The FIFA protocol was activated and an investigation is underway. We believe him. It’s unacceptable,” said the Madrid coach.
The confrontation occurred late in the game, sparked by a penalty claim and ensuing clash between the two centre-backs. What escalated the situation, however, was Rüdiger’s claim of having been subjected to a racial insult.
According to Rüdiger, Cabral called him “fucking black.” In contrast, Cabral denied the accusation, saying he had said “fucking coward.” This conflicting account was reported by Cadena SER, and FIFA has opened an investigation into the incident.
Referee Ramón Abatti immediately halted the match temporarily after being informed, implementing the first stage of FIFA’s anti-racism protocol. Although the match resumed shortly after, tensions boiled over again post-game when Rüdiger confronted Cabral, and the two had to be separated.
Mexican team's coach Jaime Lozano, when questioned post-match, offered cautious support to his player: "I just found out about this now. I haven’t spoken to Cabral yet about it, but based on what I know of him, I don’t believe this has ever happened. I stand by my captain.”
