Ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup, FIFA has unveiled a series of innovations aimed at enhancing the fan experience and increasing transparency, especially in relation to contentious decisions during matches.

For the first time, fans inside the stadiums will be able to watch the same footage the referee sees during VAR reviews. These real-time images will be displayed on the venue’s giant screens, allowing spectators to better understand the basis for key decisions and eliminating ambiguity. The goal is to foster greater clarity and trust in officiating.

In another bold step, referees will wear body cameras during matches. While previously tested in friendly games and select competitions, this will now become standard at the Club World Cup. Footage captured by these cameras will be used in live broadcasts, enhancing the viewing experience for fans both in stadiums and watching on TV. DAZN, which holds exclusive rights to the tournament, will air the content.

FIFA plans to analyze the impact of this initiative and does not rule out implementing it in future tournaments.

Following successful trials at the 2024 Intercontinental Cup and various FIFA youth competitions, semi-automated offside detection will be used at the Club World Cup. Utilizing a combination of AI, multiple tracking cameras, and a ball sensor, the system monitors player and ball positions in real time. For complex or borderline cases, traditional VAR review will still apply.

With these changes, FIFA seeks to modernize football and bring fans closer to the action than ever before.
