On Thursday morning, FIFA held a meeting with all the teams to discuss the economic outlook and structure of the upcoming Club World Cup, set to begin on June 13th. While no exact figures were provided, a significant possibility was raised: the tournament may offer greater financial rewards based on sporting achievements than the UEFA Champions League. This would make the Club World Cup the most lucrative tournament in terms of prize money for sporting merits.
Currently, a team that wins all possible matches in the Champions League can earn up to €111 million. FIFA’s ambition is to exceed that figure or at least come close to €100 million as a minimum prize. This goal appears attainable, thanks to a partnership with DAZN, which has invested €1 billion, along with sponsorships from companies like Bank of America, Hisense, Landmark, and AB InBev. The final sponsor list is still being finalized.
FIFA also emphasized that none of the revenue from the World Cup will go to its own accounts. Instead, all proceeds will be distributed to the clubs, both participants and non-participants, through a solidarity fund intended to benefit football teams, rather than national federations or confederations.
