Florentino Pérez addressed the Ordinary and Extraordinary Assembly of Real Madrid, expressing optimism about the future of the Super League. He used an analogy to emphasize the importance of adapting to change, recalling how Blockbuster, once valued at $7.7 billion, failed to see the rise of Netflix and eventually went bankrupt. "We don’t want to be Blockbuster," he said, explaining the club’s commitment to evolving with the times.
Pérez described the Super League's proposal as groundbreaking, especially its intention to offer football for free. "Today, I am more optimistic than ever," he continued, citing a landmark ruling by the European Court that challenged UEFA's monopoly, calling it historic and something "that will be studied in universities." Despite the difficulties faced, including pressure and threats, Pérez celebrated the progress made.
He compared this effort to Santiago Bernabéu’s push for the creation of the European Cup, which also faced resistance. "We are proud of this battle for the Super League. It represents a unique and real opportunity to bring greatness back to football. The system is failing, and the moment is critical."
Pérez also criticized the new format of the Champions League, calling it unfair and difficult to understand. "With more matches, the value of each one has dropped by almost 30%. More matches, but they are worth less. This competition will only inspire excitement at the end, not at the beginning."
