Florentino Pérez was reportedly furious after learning that Enrique Riquelme was present in the presidential box at the Metropolitano for the Madrid derby, according to Cadena COPE.
Paco González first revealed the incident on the ‘Tiempo de Juego’ programme, claiming: “Florentino Pérez was furious that Enrique Riquelme was in the presidential box at the Metropolitano.”
Juanma Castaño later provided further details on ‘El Partidazo’ about what he described as the “mess in the VIP box” involving the Real Madrid president during the derby, which Atlético Madrid won 2-1.
“Florentino makes a huge fuss, asking what's the point of Riquelme (the Madrid presidential candidate whom Florentino beat in the elections) being in the VIP box,” Castaño explained.
According to Castaño, the incident began during the directors’ lunch before the match. Florentino Pérez attended the Metropolitano due to his strong relationship with Atlético president Enrique Cerezo, while Miguel Ángel Gil Marín was not present.
“During the lunch, someone tells Florentino 'we are aware that Enrique Riquelme is invited to the presidential box'.”
Castaño then claimed that Pérez reacted angrily to the news.
“Florentino Pérez flies into a rage and says he's leaving, that he's going to quit. That if he crosses paths with him at any point, he'll leave the presidential box. They calm him down, Florentino stays for the match... but he throws a huge fit, asking what's the point of Riquelme being in the presidential box,” he said.
The report has since drawn attention to the relationship between Pérez and Riquelme, who previously challenged the Real Madrid president in the club’s presidential elections.
