France Football has revealed its shortlist for this year’s top individual football awards, including the highly coveted Ballon d’Or.
While the selections sparked debate among fans, some disappointed by omissions, others questioning certain inclusions, it was a different slip-up that caught attention. In keeping with tradition, the Ballon d’Or’s official social media account posted birthday wishes to past winner Luka Modric, who claimed the trophy in 2018 after a remarkable season with Real Madrid and a World Cup silver medal with Croatia.
The problem? Modric wasn’t actually celebrating anything—his birthday falls on September 9, not August 9.
The former Real Madrid captain took the mistake in stride, playfully responding: “That’s next month, but thank you anyway!” Fans joined in on the fun, sending their own premature greetings. The Ballon d’Or admins didn’t remove the post, likely comforted by Modric’s good-humored reaction.
