Gonzalo has capped off a stellar season by winning the Club World Cup Golden Boot. The Real Madrid forward scored four goals during the tournament, the same tally as Ángel Di María (Benfica), Serhou Guirassy (Borussia Dortmund), and Marcos Leonardo (Al Hilal). But it was his assist that tipped the scales in his favor, securing him the award.
The academy product made his mark early in the tournament. He found the net against Al Hilal and Salzburg in the group stage and set up Arda Güler’s goal versus Pachuca. His momentum continued in the knockout rounds; Gonzalo delivered the winning strike against Juventus in the round of 16, and opened the scoring in Madrid’s quarterfinal clash with Borussia Dortmund.
In total: four goals and one assist, a performance that reflects not only his talent but also his rising importance within the squad. This success comes on the heels of his standout domestic season, where he also finished as the top scorer in the Primera Federación with Castilla.
