The decision to rule out Arda Güler’s goal for offside sparked frustration among Real Madrid supporters, who took to social media questioning the VAR review process.
The move began with Federico Valverde heading the ball toward Gonzalo, who battled for possession before it eventually fell to Güler. The Turkish midfielder reacted quickest, beating Anatoliy Trubin to the ball and finishing into the net.
VAR initially reviewed a possible foul on the goalkeeper but found no infringement, as Güler clearly reached the ball first. Attention then shifted to Gonzalo’s position in the buildup. The semi-automatic offside system determined that the Madrid striker was marginally ahead of Benfica defender António Araújo (No. 44), leading to the goal being disallowed.
However, many fans pointed to Amar Dedic (No. 17), who appeared in broadcast images to be positioned deeper than his teammate, potentially playing Gonzalo onside. The debate quickly intensified online, with supporters questioning whether the correct defensive reference had been applied in the final decision.
