Real Madrid has taken another major stride toward completing the transformation of the Santiago Bernabéu, as the Madrid City Council has given the green light to the proposed urban development plan surrounding the stadium. The project, fully funded by the club with an investment exceeding €19.6 million, redefines the original 2018 blueprint to align with the stadium’s massive renovation and the expansion of the Santiago Bernabéu Metro station (Line 10), which will soon feature three new entrances and improved access to Plaza de Lima.

One of the most striking improvements will be the dramatic expansion of pedestrian space—from 14,500 to 40,500 square meters, a 270% increase. The redesigned area will also feature 4,500 square meters of gardens, over 300 newly planted trees, and more than a kilometer of granite benches. Additional upgrades include new paving, modernized lighting, enhanced irrigation, and improved drainage infrastructure. Accessibility is also a key focus: new parking spaces, including those designated for people with reduced mobility, and two new pedestrian crossings at Concha Espina and Padre Damián will make the area easier and safer to navigate.

The development is organized into four main zones. Rafael Salgado Street has already been modernized with broader sidewalks. Concha Espina Avenue is currently undergoing similar work, soon to boast wider sidewalks on both sides. Along Paseo de la Castellana, a nearly 20,000 m² pedestrian plaza will emerge, and the historic 1982 World Cup gardens will be restored. Lastly, Padre Damián Street will see its sidewalks doubled in width and the Sagrados Corazones roundabout reimagined into a green, circular plaza.

With these improvements, the Santiago Bernabéu will not only stand as one of the world’s premier football venues but will also be a landmark urban hub—greener, more accessible, and seamlessly integrated into the heart of Madrid.
