Alejandro Hernández Hernández has been appointed to officiate this Sunday’s Clásico (4:15 PM) at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, marking the fifth time he takes charge of a clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
So far, his record in El Clásico stands balanced: one win for each side and two draws—the latter being the results of the last two encounters he refereed. Despite the even track record, Hernández Hernández remains one of the more controversial figures among sections of the Real Madrid fanbase.
His first Clásico dates back to the 2015–16 season, when Real Madrid secured a 2–1 victory at the Camp Nou, although the match saw Sergio Ramos sent off. A year later, he officiated again—this time at the Santiago Bernabéu—where Barcelona claimed a dramatic stoppage-time win thanks to a goal from Leo Messi.
His two most recent Clásicos both ended in draws. After overseeing four straight editions between 2016 and 2019, this Sunday will mark his first return to the rivalry in nearly six years.
