Álvaro Arbeloa has written his name into Champions League history after an extraordinary run in the knockout stages with Real Madrid.
The Spanish coach has become the first manager ever to eliminate both José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola in the same edition while winning all four matches against them.
Arbeloa also joins a very exclusive list, becoming only the third coach in history to defeat both Mourinho and Guardiola in a single Champions League campaign, alongside Kasper Hjulmand and Raphaël Wicky.
His achievements don’t stop there. Arbeloa is now the first Real Madrid coach to win his first four Champions League knockout matches, underlining a perfect start on Europe’s biggest stage.
On his path to this historic milestone, Arbeloa eliminated his former mentor Mourinho by beating Benfica 0-1 away and 2-1 at home. He then knocked out Guardiola’s Manchester City with a commanding 3-0 first-leg victory followed by a 1-2 win away.
