FIFA has confirmed that PSG defenders Pacho and Lucas Hernández will each serve a two-match suspension following their red cards in the quarterfinal against Bayern Munich. This means that, should PSG advance to the final by eliminating Real Madrid, both players would miss the decisive match.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, received better news, as Dean Huijsen has only been suspended for one game after his sending-off in the quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund.
The difference in disciplinary action stems from the nature of the infractions. As FIFA detailed in its official statement, Pacho and Hernández were punished under Article 14, paragraph 1 e) of the Disciplinary Code, which refers to “rough and serious” play, hence the two-game bans.
Huijsen’s red card fell under Article 14, paragraph 1 a), which penalizes actions that “deny a goal or an obvious scoring opportunity”, leading to a one-match suspension. This is the same sanction given to Asencio, who was also sent off earlier in the tournament during the match against Pachuca.
