Real Madrid have dealt with five or more absences in 26 of the 44 matches played so far this season. The statistic highlights the magnitude of the injury crisis affecting the squad, a problem that has persisted with little relief since preseason.
Following the latest medical update concerning Thibaut Courtois, the club has now recorded a total of 51 injuries during the current campaign. The numbers illustrate the scale of the issue. There were 2 injuries in August, 4 in September, 7 in October, 11 in November, 7 in December, 7 in January, 7 in February and 6 in March.
Despite these setbacks, the team has still managed to deliver important results. With ten players unavailable, Madrid defeated Celta Vigo and Elche. Even with seven and eight absences respectively, they produced dominant victories against Manchester City and won at the Etihad Stadium. Now, with five players still sidelined and three recently returning from injury, the squad prepares for the derby.
Across La Liga, Real Madrid currently have the second highest number of injuries this season, surpassed only by Sevilla with 53 cases. The difference is notable when compared to Barcelona with 37 injuries and Atlético Madrid with 32.
Physical setbacks have repeatedly troubled the Madrid side. Last season alone the club recorded 63 injuries during a demanding campaign that stretched across 11 months and seven competitions, the final one being the FIFA Club World Cup.
The worrying figures underline the challenge facing the club’s medical and fitness departments. In response, Real Madrid have already taken steps to address the situation, bringing back Antonio Pintus to lead the physical preparation program and appointing Niko Mihic as the club’s new medical supervisor.
