Jorge Valdano has explained why he believes Kylian Mbappé deserves to be considered for the Ballon d'Or, despite Real Madrid not winning any major titles last season.
The former Real Madrid player and manager highlighted the Frenchman's remarkable goalscoring record during an appearance on Movistar Plus Deportes. Mbappé has started the current La Liga campaign with four goals in three matches, adding to the 44 goals he scored in 56 appearances in his first season at Real Madrid and 42 goals in 47 matches last season.
"It's true, this is the best start to the year Mbappé has ever had. And let's not forget that in his first year he was the top scorer in Europe and last year the top scorer in La Liga. So it's hard to ask for more from a player," Valdano said.
The former Real Madrid sporting director also made no secret of his admiration for Mbappé.
"I am devoted to Mbappé," Valdano admitted, before adding: "Kylian seems to me like a thoroughbred who is at the best moment of his career, at a moment of absolute fulfillment due to age, confidence and class."
Valdano also dismissed the argument that Mbappé should not be among the Ballon d'Or candidates simply because Real Madrid failed to win titles last season.
"They say... 'no, but he didn't win any titles.' Well, it's much harder to score goals in a team that isn't playing well together," he pointed out.
