Víctor Muñoz is set to become a new Liverpool player, according to Fabrizio Romano, in a deal that represents a complete turnaround in negotiations.

The player had been in advanced talks with Newcastle, with a transfer agreement close to €35 million plus €5 million in add-ons reportedly on the table. However, Liverpool ultimately stepped in and agreed to pay his €40 million release clause to secure the transfer.

The move sees the Premier League club win the race for one of last season’s breakout stars in La Liga. Muñoz is expected to sign a contract until 2032 and has already completed his medical in the United States, according to reports.

Newcastle had been negotiating with the player’s representatives for several days and were close to reaching an agreement with Osasuna before Liverpool activated the clause.

Real Madrid will benefit financially from the transfer, as they hold 50% of the player’s rights along with a right of first refusal, which they chose not to exercise. As a result, the Spanish club will receive half of the €40 million fee.

Muñoz, who is currently participating in the World Cup, will move to the Premier League where he will be managed by Spanish coach Andoni Iraola.

The transfer also marks a historic sale for Osasuna, becoming the most expensive departure in the club’s history.
