On Monday, Luka Modric etched his name in the history books by becoming the oldest goal-scorer ever at a European Championship. Despite his record-breaking goal, it wasn't enough to keep Croatia's hopes alive in the tournament. Italy's Mattia Zaccagni scored in the eighth minute of stoppage time, securing a 1-1 draw and Italy's advancement to the knockout stage.

Croatia's chances of staying in Euro 2024 now hinge on a highly improbable series of favorable results from other matches. Modric, at 38 years and 289 days old, netted the opening goal on a rebound in the 55th minute, shortly after having a penalty saved by Italy's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The previous record for the oldest goal-scorer was held by Ivica Vastic, who was 38 years and 257 days old when he scored for Austria against Poland in Euro 2008. Modric received standing ovations from the fans when he was substituted in the 80th minute and was applauded again during the post-game news conference.
