The NBA is reportedly preparing plans to create a European basketball league, a project that has been under discussion for some time. According to AS, the NBA has already sent an offer to the EuroLeague, which must respond by Tuesday, October 6. The EuroLeague and its 13 member clubs will now have to discuss and evaluate the terms of the proposal.
According to AS, the NBA's plan would involve acquiring the EuroLeague and using it as the basis for creating its own competition in Europe.
MARCA reports that NBA Europe could launch with 12 main venues located in London, Paris, Rome, Milan, Berlin, Munich, Istanbul, Madrid, Athens, Barcelona, Manchester and Lyon. The proposed format would include 12 founding teams and four additional teams.
As for Spain, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Baskonia are reportedly set to participate, while Valencia Basket is also expected to be included.
According to The Athletic, several major European football clubs, including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, are reportedly working with the NBA on the project.
NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum also discussed the initiative at the annual European Football Clubs Conference, organized by the EFC and Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, president of Paris Saint-Germain. “We've learned so much from European football over the years. We launched a tournament during the season, the NBA Cup. That idea was taken directly from European football and sports, where these cup tournaments exist within the seasons; we asked ourselves, 'Why can't we do the same?' So we applied that model to our league. I think one of the goals we're pursuing with our initiative in Europe, as I've already mentioned, is to replicate some of the great lessons derived from what you've built here. Football is, without a doubt, the most important sport in the world...” Tatum said, in comments reported by MARCA.
