Rodri Hernández, or a midfielder with a similar profile, was one of Real Madrid’s biggest unfulfilled objectives during the summer transfer window. For much of the summer, there was speculation about a potential move for the Spanish midfielder, but the transfer never materialized and Rodri ultimately joined Barcelona.

Speaking on COPE’s “El Partidazo” last night, journalist Manolo Lama offered his explanation for why Rodri did not end up at Real Madrid, pointing the finger directly at Florentino Pérez.

“Rodri isn't playing for Real Madrid because Florentino Pérez didn't want him to play for Real Madrid. I think Florentino Pérez didn't want him to play for Madrid. It's impossible for Florentino Pérez to let a player slip away for 4, 5, or 3 million when he paid 140 million for Diomande, and paid 60-something million for others... If he's not playing for Real Madrid, it's because Florentino Pérez didn't want him to. When Florentino sets his sights on a player, it's very difficult for him to let them get away.”

Lama's comments suggest that, in his view, Rodri’s failure to join Real Madrid was not primarily a financial or negotiating issue, but rather a decision made by the club president himself.

The midfielder’s potential arrival had been discussed extensively throughout the summer, particularly given Real Madrid’s need for a player capable of operating as a defensive midfielder. However, the club ultimately pursued other options, while Rodri’s next destination turned out to be Barcelona.
