Marcelo knew it was the end. The Real Madrid left-back was the last player to take the stage as the team's captain, saluting a roaring crowd.
He carried the Champions League trophy to his teammates, knelt for a moment, and then walked over to them. He passed out at that point.
The players gathered around him to form a huddle. Then, among a crowd of players, he was seen hugging Lucas Vazquez and then Casemiro for a long time.
Marcelo struggled with his words as he said, "It is a wonderful moment in my life, I am bringing my cycle to an end here, at the best club in the world."
"Today is not a day of sadness, but it is a day of joy because we have once again won the best competition in the world. I am very proud of myself and so is my family.
"We have experienced so many magical nights together. I tell you one thing, the future of Real Madrid is very good with the youngsters. Hala Madrid!"
As he revealed to Real Madrid TV, the 34-year-old, who was praised by his teammates, is already considering returning to Real Madrid in a different role.
"I've cried, my family has cried," Marcelo said. "I always believed in myself, I thought I was going to make history, but I hadn't thought about 25 because Gento was 24 or 23.
"They signed me to win trophies and I have achieved that. I know it won't be my last day here, I have to do something else at the club."
