Juan Martínez Munuera has been appointed to referee El Clásico between Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Alicante-born official has been selected by the Technical Committee of Referees to oversee the highly anticipated encounter, which comes amid growing controversy surrounding recent events on and off the pitch. Javier Iglesias Villanueva will assist him in the VAR room.
The 44-year-old referee will take charge of his fifth Clásico after 14 seasons in LaLiga. Real Madrid have won three of the previous four matches he has officiated, including a 3-1 league victory in 2020, a 4-0 win in the second leg of the 2023 Copa del Rey semi-final and a 4-1 triumph in the 2024 Spanish Super Cup final. Barcelona's only victory came in a 4-0 league win in 2022.
Martínez Munuera has already refereed both teams once this season. He was in charge of Barcelona's 3-1 victory over Sevilla at the Sánchez-Pizjuán, while he officiated Real Madrid's 4-0 win over Málaga at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Across his career, the Alicante official has refereed 46 Real Madrid matches, with Los Blancos recording 30 wins, nine draws and seven defeats. He has also taken charge of 40 Barcelona games, in which the Catalan side have registered 27 victories, six draws and seven losses.
