Real Madrid secured a hard-fought win over Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabéu, but the spotlight quickly shifted from the three points to the refereeing controversy that surrounded the match. VAR intervened on three separate occasions to disallow goals for Los Blancos: one from Arda Güler for handball and two from Kylian Mbappé for offside, triggering outrage among the Madrid faithful.
The first of Mbappé’s disallowed goals came in the seventh minute. A perfectly placed long ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold put the Frenchman through on goal, and he calmly slotted past Leo Román. The Bernabéu erupted in celebration, but referee José María Sánchez Martínez, after consulting VAR, annulled the goal for a razor-thin offside.
Hours later, Mbappé took to Instagram, posting the VAR image that had ruled out his goal, adding fuel to the controversy.
At the stadium, the reaction was immediate. Between disbelief and fury, Madrid fans voiced their anger at the officiating, chanting loudly against the Technical Committee of Referees.
