Radio MARCA revealed the tense exchange between Kylian Mbappé and journalist Miguel Ángel Toribio after Real Madrid’s 3-4 win over Olympiacos in the Champions League. Mbappé, who scored all four of Madrid’s goals, was asked whether he felt there was “Mbappé-dependence” and if the team relied too heavily on his scoring.
The French star reacted immediately and showed clear frustration. “I think this question is disrespectful to you and a bad question,” he responded.
Mbappé, who now has 9 goals in 5 Champions League matches, highlighted that “everyone has their role in the team, and mine is usually to score goals.”
He added that Real Madrid would not have won without the contributions of his teammates. “I can say that without our players we wouldn’t have won the game.”
The striker continued to push back against the idea of dependency. “In every team there are players with specific responsibilities and mine is to score goals. That’s what I can do for the team. I don’t think there’s any dependence. It’s more something from journalists or people outside.”
Toribio reminded him that he did not score in the games against Liverpool, Rayo Vallecano, and Elche, and that Real Madrid didn’t win those matches.
Mbappé doubled down on his stance. “Yes, but you shouldn’t say dependence. You should say Kylian is one of the reasons we didn’t win, because my job is to score goals. Not dependence. You should say Kylian hasn’t scored and that Kylian needs to score.”
So far this season, Mbappé has scored 22 of Real Madrid’s 40 goals.
