The absence of a true central playmaker has become a recurring topic whenever Real Madrid’s performances or results fail to convince. Since the departures of Toni Kroos and later Luka Modric, the team has lacked a clear reference point to organize play from midfield. Both Xabi Alonso and now Álvaro Arbeloa have been searching for the right formula to restore fluency and balance in the middle of the pitch.

Luis Milla, who knows the role well after playing more than 200 matches for Real Madrid between 1990 and 1997, shared his views with AS. While he does not question the quality of the current squad, Milla believes the team is missing a specific profile. “The players we have now each have their own qualities and perform their roles well, but I do think we need someone who understands what the team needs at every moment. Whether it’s a quick pass, a sideways one, or a vertical ball. A player who sees the first attacking option and knows how to manage the rhythm of the game.”

According to the former international, the need for this type of midfielder has been evident since Kroos and Modric left. “But not just any player,” he clarifies. “Someone like the German or the Croatian, or profiles such as Vitinha at PSG, Pedri, or Zubimendi.” Milla also stresses that the issue cannot be solved by signing players without a clear plan, especially given the limitations of the winter transfer window. “It has to be a top-level player. Just any signing won’t fix it.”

Milla adds that a central midfielder’s responsibilities go beyond organizing play. “He has all his teammates around him and must also decide when the team presses,” he explains, highlighting the importance of quick thinking and execution. “Whether you want to dominate possession or attack quickly on the counter, that player helps the team adapt to each situation.”

“That’s why Kroos and Modric are still so fondly remembered,” Milla concludes. “Players with that special understanding of the game are very hard to find.” Even so, he believes Arbeloa can unlock the team’s potential: “The first step is convincing the players. After that, we can talk about tactics and technique.”
