Luka Modric will remain with Real Madrid, pending an official club announcement. The Croatian midfielder has agreed to a 50% salary cut, reducing his earnings to five million euros net per season starting next year.
At 38, Modric's role has become more secondary under Carlo Ancelotti, with fewer starts and more appearances as a substitute. Despite playing 46 games last season, his contributions are now seen as more influential in the locker room than on the pitch. Nevertheless, his form remains strong, and he is set to compete in the upcoming European Championship with Croatia.
After months of uncertainty, Modric met with Real Madrid's board to express his desire to stay another year. His new contract will keep him with the club until he is 39, earning significantly less than top stars like Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, or Kylian Mbappé.
The decision to retain Modric was also influenced by the retirement of Toni Kroos, ensuring the continuation of a formidable midfield lineup including Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde, Bellingham, and Modric himself.
